Caymus is located on 73 acres owned and farmed since the 1940s by the Wagner family. It is on the former site of Rutherford's Liberty School where Charlie Wagner and his wife, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, first met as children. Some of the boards of the deconstructed Liberty School are used in the Wagner family home and winery buildings. The families of Charlie and Lorna Wagner emigrated from Alsace and Germany, respectively, and have roots in Napa Valley going as far back as the mid-1850s.
At the age of 19, Chuck Wagner joined his parents Charlie and Lorna in founding Caymus Vineyards with its first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon produced in 1972. In 1975, the Wagners produced their first Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon made from outstanding Cabernet lots of that vintage. It is the only wine to have twice been named Wine Spectator magazine's "Wine of the Year" for the 1984 and 1990 vintages.
Caymus Vineyards is still the home base of the Wagner family although Chuck Wagner's children, Charlie II, Joseph, and Jenny have joined the family business of farming and winemaking throughout multiple regions of the state of California. In addition to Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, the Wagner Family of Wine tasting room located on Caymus Vineyards property serves and sells Mer Soleil Chardonnays, Belle Glos and Meiomi Pinot Noirs, and the classic, Conundrum California blend.
The winery continues to be a real working family farm and business where you might find any of the Wagners driving a tractor, shoveling a tank, or working in the barrel room. They welcome their guests to visit and try wines made with quality, care, and Wagner family pride. |
