Napa Vintners Elect Hugh Davies 2006 Association President
2/1/2006 - St Helena, Napa Valley, CA - Hugh Davies, president of Schramsberg and J Davies Vineyards, has been elected president of the board of directors of Napa Valley Vintners ( NVV), the trade association of more than 270 member wineries from California's Napa Valley. Davies takes the reins of this prestigious wine industry position from 2005 NVV president, Joel Aiken, vice-president of Beaulieu Vineyards.
Davies will lead the organization's on-going efforts to protect the Napa Valley Appellation, promote and market the region domestically and internationally and will also preside over the board of directors of Auction Napa Valley, the world's most successful charity wine auction. Along with his fellow vintners, he will keep Napa Valley on the leading edge of enforcing the state's truth in labeling laws, champion environmental causes like sustainable agriculture and watershed protection, and continue the association's programs to provide adequate and quality farm worker housing.
The coming year will be a full one for Davies as he also takes the helm of his family's vineyard and winery operations, stepping up from general manager to president of Schramsberg Vineyards, one of Napa Valley's signature sparkling wine producers, as well as the J Davies label which crafts Cabernet Sauvignon from the family's vineyards in Calistoga.
Schramsberg Vineyards was established in 1965 by his parents Jamie and, the late, Jack Davies. The Davies family renovated the historic property during the early stages of what would be Napa Valley's renaissance at a time when there were less than thirty wineries in Napa Valley. Hugh was born that founding year and grew up in the family business, worked for Champagne producers in France and graduated from UC Davis with a degree in enology.
Also serving on the NVV board of directors for 2006 are vice president, Peter McCrea, Stony Hill Vineyards; chief financial officer, W. Clarke Swanson, Swanson Vineyards and Winery; secretary, Paula Kornell, Oakville Ranch Winery; Joel Aiken, Beaulieu Vineyards; Karen Cakebread, Cakebread Cellars; Cyril Chappellet, Chappellet Winery and Vineyard; Stephen Corley, Monticello Vineyards; Tracey Skupny, Lang & Reed Wine Company; Pat Stotesbury, Ladera Vineyards; and Craig Williams, Joseph Phelps Vineyards.
Now in our seventh decade, the NVV trade association is the sole organization responsible for promoting and protecting the Napa Valley Appellation as a winegrowing region second to none in the world. Respect for our history reinforces our commitment to the preservation and enhancement of the Valley's land, wine, and community for future generations. We address the shared interests of our more than 270 members and aspire to be the essential organization for all Napa Valley vintners.0241033926
