NAPA VALLEY VINTNERS AWARDS TWO SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL GRADUATES
5/25/1999 - The Napa Valley Vintners awarded two scholarships, each in the amount of $2,000, to Giancarlo Bettinelli, St. Helena High School, and Levi Hetrick, Vintage High School.
The NVV created this annual scholarship to recognize the achievements of outstanding high school seniors in Napa County. This is the sixth year the Association has handed out these awards.
Both graduates were nominated by their schools for outstanding academic achievements and extracurricular activities. They were selected by the Scholarship Subcommittee of the NVV's Community and Industry Issues Committee consisting of Walt Hampe, Sutter Home Winery; Willinda McCrea, Stony Hill Vineyard; John Shafer of Shafer Vineyards; and Becky Peterson, NVV director of industry and member relations.
"The choice was based not only on scholastic ability but also on the candidates character, willingness to work in their school or community and on financial need," said Hampe. Each candidate was required to have plans to attend a junior college, four-year college or university. A career interest in the wine or grape industry was not a prerequisite.
Next year Bettinelli, son of Larry Bettinelli and Marsha Tiedemann Bettinelli of Yountville, plans to study fruit science at Cal Poly in San Louis Obispo. He has been active in 4H as well as in football and baseball. Hetrick, son of Jeff Hetrick and Susan Hetrick, both of Napa, plans to study engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
The Napa Valley Vintners is a professional non-profit trade organization representing 155 Napa Valley Wineries in marketing and promotional activities throughout the United States and abroad. NVV maintains a website at www.napavintners.com.
