NAPA VALLEY VINTNERS ELECT JACK STUART AS 2000 ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

1/12/2000 - Jack Stuart, Winemaker and General Manager, Silverado Vineyards, has been elected president of the Napa Valley Vintners (NVV), one of the most prominent positions in the wine industry.

Stuart assumes the reins from Tom Shelton, NVV's 1999 president and president of Joseph Phelps Vineyards.

Over the next year Stuart will lead the prestigious regional trade association that represents 167 Napa Valley wineries in marketing and promotional activities throughout the world.

"I am enthusiastic about leading Napa Valley vintners in our common goals of promoting Napa Valley wines in the world market and advancing successful measures to protect the integrity of the appellation," Stuart says.

Stuart's agenda for 2000 promises a proactive approach to a number of industry issues: strengthening rules regulating geographic brand names and flavored or diluted wines, ensuring greater consumer access to fine wines, expanding farm worker housing and protecting Napa Valley's greatest resource - its environment.

Stuart is a veteran of the Napa Valley wine industry. He joined Silverado Vineyards in 1980 and took charge of winery design and vineyard development. He is a fifth-generation Californian who grew up among Santa Clara Valley orchards and received a literature degree from Stanford.

In the mid-seventies, Stuart's growing interest in wine took him to the University of California at Davis for graduate study in viticulture and enology. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Napa Valley and Silverado.

Stuart has long been involved in key wine industry issues as a past president of the Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association and a founder of the North Coast Pierce's Disease Task Force.

Also elected to year-long officer positions with the NVV are Vice President, Margaret Duckhorn, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Duckhorn Vineyards; CFO, John Trefethen, Managing Director, Trefethen Vineyards; Secretary, Catherine Carpy, Marketing, Freemark Abbey Winery.

New Board members elected for two-year terms are: Dawnine Dyer, Vice President Winemaker, Domaine Chandon; Clay Gregory, Vice President, General Manager, Robert Mondavi Winery; Bob Pecota, Owner, Robert Pecota Winery; John Trefethen, Managing Director, Trefethen Vineyards. Re-elected are: Catherine Carpy, marketing, Freemark Abbey Winery, and Wine Auction Community Board members Martha May and Joe Criscione.

The Napa Valley Vintners is a professional nonprofit trade organization representing 165 wineries in marketing and promotional activities throughout the United States and abroad. NVV maintains a website at www.napavintners.com and a year-round information hotline at 1-800-982-1371.
