The big picture

Although the Napa Valley Vintners donates millions of dollars each year to area non-profits from the funds raised at Auction Napa Valley, the significance of these grants doesn't have much meaning until one sees what the mission statement is for each non-profit organization and the amount of funding to be contributed by the Napa Valley Vintners. When my friends and I discussed Auction Napa Valley in past years, we always talked about how wonderful the various events at the wine auction were. When I showed my friends the full page ad that ran in the Napa Valley Register last fall that listed each non-profit, their mission statement, and the amount of grants to be made by Napa Valley Vintners, everyone was astonished. All anyone could say was WOW! Thanks Napa Valley Vintners for supporting area non-profits so everyone in our community can have access to health care and social services that many of us take for granted.

30th Anniversary/1st time Trip to Napa

For our 30th Anniversary, (January 5th, 1980) we were planning a trip with our grown children to Mexico during the Christmas Holiday to celebrate both our 30th Anniversary and our son-in-law's 30th birthday. On Mother's Day of 2009, my daughter and her husband surprised us with the news that we would become 1st time--so our Anniversary/Birthday trip was not going to happen, at least that year.

My husband and myself enjoy wine and decided that we should try to get away to celebrate our 30th Anniversary, in another way. We had never had the opportunity to visit Napa or any other wine area before, so we thought this would be a wonderful opportunity. We celebrated our 30th Anniversary early, so we could see both the harvest and the crushing of the grapes. What a gorgeous time of the year! We absolutely LOVED our visit to Napa and would love to have the opportunity to come back for another visit. Although we don't have an true "auction" story, I hope you'll consider our 30th Anniversary as another reason to send us back. We also joined 3 wine clubs while during our visit and are enjoying the wines nightly!!

Auction Napa Valley Renaissance

I was fortunate to work on many fun auction lots for Beringer over the years, and one of my favorites included a custom-painted fresco by Gary Maricich, and a renaissance-themed lunch for the bidders and guests that we hosted in a vineyard up on Howell Mountain. It was a glorious day, the food and wines and view were divine, and the lot winner, David Doyle and his friends, all donned beautiful cloaks, hats, and masks for the photo op. It was a blast!

How Auction Napa Valley saved health care.....

After 14 years as a beneficiary volunteer and agency Executive Director for Family Service of Napa Valley, I want to share one of the more memorable moments of the Live Auction. It was the year, Robin Williams was the surprise MC/auctioneer...amazing talent, incredibility funny entertainer, he stood back stage and watched the Hoopla team get the crowd excited about bidding...after a few moments he came over to me asked for our squirt guns, head dress, noise makers and started to cha-cha near and up on stage with the Hoopla team in tow...what a response from the participants!! It was great to see the spirit of the auction demonstrated so clearly by helping each other through art of giving!!

My Favorite Assassin

I was attending the Auction with fellow staff members from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in what must have been 2001 during a particularly scorching hot early June. Hotter still under the tent at the live auction at Meadowood. I recall water guns being there so there must have been a wild west theme. At some point during the afternoon I began to experience sneak attacks from someone with a sharp aim and a full water pistol. A squirt would sail across the tent and hit me in the back of the end. I would turn to look and find no one. Minutes would pass and then, splash, right across the face! I looked around again but the assailant remained hidden. Sprays of water across my back, in my hair and from head to toe. An armed stalker was at large and needed to be stopped! Finally, during one spray right to the back of my head, where I could feel the sniper behind me I turned to face one ornery Robert Mondavi with a wicked dead aim and an impish grin that I have never forgotten. Thank you for the memories Auction Napa Valley!

Proud volunteer an opportunity to be a "Guest"

I moved back to Napa eleven years ago. I was actually born at St. Helena Hospital; my dad was an orderly at Vet's Hospital and I was a Dr. Wood's baby!!! However, I only lived here until I was four years old.

When I moved here in '99 I joined several organizations and have been happy to be a volunteer, giving me many opportunities to see different aspects of the county and how involved so many residents are in their community. Last year was my first stint as a volunteer for the auction. Placing placards made by many of the recipient organizations on backs of chairs was quite an eye opener. Many were made by children and were truly inspiring. So, it would be wonderful to attend as a guest after my duties are done as a volunteer.

101 Reasons to Auction Napa Valley!

Wow - look what came up on Facebook! A give away two tickets to The Napa Valley Auction! You're supposed to post something anecdotal or give a compelling reason why you should be selected. So, should I tell them we discovered Napa Valley on our honeymoon, stopped at the new Robert Mondavi Winery, were wowed by Cliff May's design? That we went on up to Charles Krug, Inglenook, & Christian Brothers? Whew, that was awhile back. Should I say we kinda worked our way through the years together right along with the incredible growth of the industry there... maybe I'll mention we've followed along here at home with Wine Spectator, visited there whenever we could, watched Bottle Shock three times, read Judgement of Paris, love the yellow and red color of the vines in late fall? What if I say how the book The House of Mondavi really got to me, and now we follow the family's new venture, Continuum. Oh, and then there's that new AVA! What do you think? Really. Why would we want to attend?

R: Why wouldn't we?

Auction Metamorphosis

ANV is an incredible event! I designed the costumes for the "Metamorphosis" theme - we celebrated at and Robert and Magrit Mondavi's with the design crew a few month later -all of us in costume, Robert Mondavi the Indian Chief in black.
